TURLOCK, CALIF. – August 30, 2004 – Visualware Inc. today introduced a new security tool that enables Internet users to identify suspect connections to their computer, see where connections originate on a global map, and quickly obtain the ISP’s abuse reporting information.
CallerIP complements personal firewall programs by monitoring open ports that are necessary to send and receive data via the Internet, but are normally not protected by firewalls. The open ports often provide a backdoor that enables a hacker to gain access to a system, a Trojan program to retrieve confidential information, or similar security breaches that can lead to loss of data and even identity theft. CallerIP monitors connections to a computer in real-time, showing the country of origin and process being used, which are often key indicators of suspect activity. With a simple click on an IP address, the user sees the network provider (ISP) location on a world map, the ISP’s abuse reporting information, and the domain registration contact information.
“CallerIP is unique in its similarity to the Caller ID phone service that we depend on to recognize telephone intruders -- it enables an Internet user to easily see where a connection originates and thus identify a suspicious connection before damage is done,” said Julian Palmer, chief marketing officer for Visualware. "For instance, during a recent worldwide attack many ecommerce sites were infected with a Trojan horse, which in turn infected the visitors to the websites, recording the visitor's keystroke information and transmitting it to hackers in Russia. As CallerIP identified connections as originating in Russia, users were quickly alerted and could terminate the connection, avoiding possible theft of credit card, login, or other confidential information.
CallerIP features an extensive database of harmful Trojans that can compromise a system or its data, and highlights these connections in red to alert the user to a suspect intruder. In addition, active port scanning monitors the system for active Internet services such as HTTP, FTP, and SNMP that could allow unauthorized access.
